Quiriquíres: Origen de la palabra, significado y significantes en la lengua Caribe.

Abstract

Quiriquíreses la palabra aceptada que designa a una nación de lengua Caribe que habitó en el territorio venezolano. Es también empleada en la literatura como etnónimo y topónimo. En el presente artículo se hace una revisión al término, empleando para ello las crónicas de indias, trabajos documentales de antropólogos, lingüistas, y entrevistas realizadas a personas de los pueblos caribe-hablantes; para conocer el origen, significado y significante que las culturas caribes asignaban a esa palabra, y que valores y usos le dieron los invasores europeos. A través del análisis de los diversos escritos contrastados con los avances en lingüística y las expresiones de los pueblos existentes, los resultados adquieren un mayor sentido con relación a los contextos vividos y recogidos en tiempos de la invasión europea.

Quiriquíres is the accepted word that designates a Caribbean-speaking nation that lived in Venezuelan territory. It is also used in literature as an ethnonym and toponym. In this article a review is made at the end, using the chronicles of the Indians, documentary works by anthropologists, linguists, and interviews with people from the Caribbean-speaking peoples; to know the origin, meaning and significance that the Caribbean cultures assigned to that word, and what values and uses the European invaders gave it. Through the analysis of the various writings contrasted with the advances in linguistics and the expressions of the existing peoples, the results acquire a greater meaning in relation to the contexts lived and collected in times of the European invasion.
